On New Year's Eve, Kate did a "
hanbok rehearsal" and tried on the Korean dress
halmoni sent her. It is a Korean tradition to dress up in a new
hanbok on New Year's Day and pay respects to your elders and ancestors.
Kate thought she looked good, but wasn't too sure about the whole thing.
When Appa got out his Korean wedding hat, Kate felt a lot better about wearing her
hanbok.
Afterwards, it was time get back into regular clothes and head to the Korean market in Glendale. We needed to buy the ingredients for rice cake soup
(ddukgook), the traditional New Year's Day dish
. A pop song came over the speaker system and Appa and Kate busted out some dance moves in the Instant Ramen aisle.
We had
bibimbop for New Year's Eve dinner. Yum.
Kate hadn't used her chopsticks in a while and checked out the pink girls' face. She ate most of her meal with her chopsticks, and even gobbled down a bunch of kimchi, something she liked as a baby and toddler. "Ummm. Kimchi is really good for your health!" she pronounced.
After dinner, Appa got his party face on.
Kate decided to make a wall out of the softest-blanket-in-the-world that Dr. Lisa sent us. She decorated it with her books and toys.
In honor of New Year's Eve, we bought two cans of silly string to shoot at each other.
We quickly discovered that silly string makes a big mess. Kate ran to the closet. "I'm going to get my broom!"
Next up were the confetti poppers. Kate and I both braced ourselves for the POP!
"Oooh, I like this, Momma!" The consensus was that confetti poppers were more fun...
...easier to clean up.
...and reuseable. "Hooray!"
After we cleaned up, Kate led our instrument parade around the house.
The great thing about being on the West coast was that Kate was able to watch the ball drop in Times Square. She put on her pajamas and her princess nightgown and danced with Appa while waiting.
"3-2-1! Happy New Year!!"
The first kiss of the New Year.
Happy 2009! Sae hae bok mani badu saeyo!

Kate is sooo cute with her hanbok and you are so great to make the duk-gook! Mom made it for us the morning we left.... Emma wasnt so sure about eating soup for breakfast but it was delicious!
Thanks, Emil! I'm sure we have maybe one more year of the hanbok-saebae-thing before she revolts.
Kate has such a joy for life. Even grocery shopping can't stop her from dancing! I just love her personality! It really shows in your pictures.
Thanks, Andrea!
