Today we went to see "The Backyardigans Live! Tale of the Mighty Knights," or as Kate calls it, the "Alive Backyardigans" at the Nokia Theater downtown.
Kate and Lucy screaming and running towards each other.
All the kids were given "shields" before the show so they could rock out to the song, "We're Knights."
As we headed into the Nokia theater, Kate was ready to burst. "I'm so excited, Mom!"
This was one of the first children's events we had been to where there was a significant number of African American families. The best thing about "The Backyardigans" television show is its musical and ethnic diversity. When the audience warm-up guy asked who everyone's favorite character was, Uniqua and Tyrone got the most screams. Kate likes them the most, too.
At first we thought the performers would be in puppet suits lip-synching the songs from the television show. Turns out, it was going to be an actual musical with the performers acting, dancing, and singing the songs themselves. We knew Kate would be a little confused ("that man doesn't look like Tyrone"), so we prepared her by showing the clips on You Tube.
Before the show, Chris and Hilary got the requisite Backyardigans schwag (T-shirt, light-up wand) and snacks (a big tub of popcorn -- Kate's favorite).
Here is a video of Kate and Lucy chomping away:
Aside from the popcorn, Kate and Lucy enjoyed bouncing in their seats, shouting out ("No! The egg is behind you!!), waving their wands like cigarette lighters, and singing along.
Kate and Lucy looking through some additional schwag post-show -- a Backyardigans DVD, coloring and watercolor sheets, and a "Go, Diego Go!" bracelet. Kate and Lucy chanted, "Go, Diego Go!" all the way to the parking lot.
