Cousin Emma in Chapel Hill was a cowgirl for Halloween this year...
...and Cousin Kes in Tucson was a Flamenco dancer. Both girls looked beautiful and had a great time with their friends.
On Election Day, Kestrel voted for Barack Obama (Go Kes!) at her school.
Kate really wanted to go to the polling booths with us, so we waited until after school to vote. She was thrilled with the "I Voted" sticker the ladies gave her, and even more excited about the lollipop she got.
This morning when Kate woke up, I said, "Guess who won the election last night, Kate?" And she gasped and said, "BARACK OBAMA!" She later said she loved both Barack Obama and John McCain. "They're good people." This is why I'm so hopeful about the future. The younger generation has renewed my faith in the democratic process and in our country. When CNN declared Obama as the Projected Winner, and the banner with "207" electoral votes rose above Grant Park in Chicago, I burst into tears. As Obama said in his victory speech last night, "it's been a long time coming," and I'm so grateful I was able to witness and participate in such a beautiful moment in history.
On the other hand, a majority of Californians shockingly voted for Proposition 8, banning same-sex couples from the legal right to marriage. It makes me incredibly sad that people continue to be so ignorant, fearful, bigoted, and hateful in this day and age that they would vote to amend our Constitution in order to take away a human being's civil rights. We may have come a long way, but there's still a long way to go.
I hope Kate, Emma, Kes, and all their friends will inherit a better, safer, more peaceful and loving world.
