Cooked Parrot

Late Sunday afternoon, we heard a big BOOM! outside our house right before all the lights went out. A pandemonium of parrots squawked and took off, making me think it was an earthquake or an explosion somewhere. Our neighbors came out of their houses to investigate, and saw a charred parrot lying at the foot of the electrical pole. Poor guy. We didn't show Kate the parrot, but explained what had happened. She thought it was all very exciting and eagerly helped Chris gather the camping lanterns and candles while we waited for the electric company guy to come. "I know! Let's pretend we're camping!!" All the parrots fled across the street to the top of a tree. As the sun set they were squawking away, probably discussing their poor friend's fate and how to avoid it in the future.
Kate got out her glow stick and had a Luke Skywalker moment. Too young to grasp the concept of electricity, she kept asking, "Is the light in the kitchen working? What about my room? Can we watch a DVD? Mom, why isn't the garage light isn't turning on?"
Unfortunately, this was the evening L.A. decided to nose dive into winter, and it was freezing in the house.
After camping, we did a little night fishing. Kate caught a big shark in the form of her Dad. It was actually nice to get a forced break from our addictive electronic gadgets and spend some quality time together. Kate couldn't wait to report all the drama to her preschool teachers the next morning.
