Kate's First Christmas Pageant and Pop-Pop Comes To Visit!

On Friday evening, Kate's preschool held its annual Christmas Pageant in the church. Kate was especially excited because her Pop-Pop flew all the way from New Jersey for the weekend. Kate has spent the past few weeks singing Christmas songs around the house, like "Friendly Beasts," which I thought sounded more like a Halloween song. It cracked me up to hear Kate singing lyrics like, "We cooed Him to sleep, my mate and I." She'd also been asking Chris and me to play "Joseph" and "Mary" every night. "Appa, you're Joseph, and Mom, you're Mary and you have a baby in your belly and I'm your friend. We need to find a hotel room but no one has one so we have to sleep in the manger with the animals." Sometimes a "nice innkeeper" would have an available hotel room and Kate would get excited and shout, "Look! A lovely hotel room!" Kate is in the center of this picture, trying to find us in the pews. Unfortunately, we were sitting towards the back and forgot our long paparazzi lens. These shots were taken by Chris who was standing off to the side with the rest of the Dads in the press section. It was a media circus. Kate and her classmates held up little stuffed animals for the "Friendly Beasts" number. Kate liked holding her lamb over her head and twirling it. Kate finally spotted me and Pop-Pop in the audience and spent the rest of the performance waving and calling out, "Hi, Mom!" then looking towards her left and mouthing, "Hi, Appa!" Kate's teacher, Ms. Carrie, standing in the upper left, looked like she was ready for a stiff drink.
Kate and her best friend at school, Maya.
The older kids played Mary, Joseph, and the sheep, and acted out "The Story of Christmas." Everyone sang "Go Tell It On The Mountain," "Mary Had A Baby," and "Silent Night," among other songs I remember from "Little House on the Prairie." They ended the program with "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" and walked back down the aisle of the church, holding hands two-by-two. Truly adorable.
On Saturday, we went to get our Christmas tree with Pop-Pop.
Kate showing Pop-Pop the angel tree-topper we finally bought this year. In previous years we used the "homemade" angel Chris and I made many years ago out of a paper towel roll and paper mache. It looked like two artistically-challenged people made it.
Kate wanted to put the angel on the top. But then asked to be brought down right away. "I'm too high! I don't like it!" For the first time, Kate really loved pulling out the ornaments and hanging them up. Every year we buy a new ornament that represents something about the year. This year, it was popcorn. Kate's go-to for fountain wishes.
